Awakening to the realization that God will finish what He started in us

Let’s lay aside any doubts about whether Jesus will complete the work of salvation that He started in us. Like an artist working on a painting, Jesus will not rest until we have become His masterpiece!

This devotional blog is part of the Awakening Series.  It is based on the song “Author and Finisher.”

Song: Author and Finisher

In Your word I find

Divine design

For victory over sin

You realize

You sympathize

You know where I give in

And You are daily recreating and correcting me

To the uttermost you’re saving and perfecting me

And I do believe You when You say

I will be like You one day.

For You are the Author

And the Finisher

Author and Finisher of my faith

The Masterbuilder,  the Creator

Of a new humanity

I am Your masterpiece!

When you died, I died,

The old life died,

I left that life behind

When you rose, I arose,

New life arose

As truth renewed my mind

Your grace has come to me

And given me true liberty

Your grace has come to me

And given me Your purity

So I do believe You

When You say

I will be like You one day.

BRIDGE

For you are the Author, and the Finisher

Author and Finisher of my faith

The Masterbuilder, the Creator

Of a new humanity

I am your Masterpiece!

Bible Reading

Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. ” Hebrews 12:2 (NIV)

I pray with great faith for you, because I’m fully convinced that the One who began this glorious work in you will faithfully continue the process of maturing you and will put His finishing touches to it ..until the unveiling of our Lord Jesus Christ!” Philippians 1:6 (TPT)

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10, (NLT).

“Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” 1 John 3:2 (NIV)

Today I want to focus our attention on a marvelous truth: Jesus is the Author and Finisher of our faith. Since some of us have heard this many times before, we might miss the wonder of this truth. So I figured its worth digging a little deeper into the meaning of these two key words.

Author

The Greek word translated author is archēgon.  It also means captain and prince. Other translators have used the words pioneer, champion, founder, source, and leader.

Our salvation is a creative, original, work, with Jesus as its author. When I got saved, I didn’t just receive pardon for my sins from God, I became a new creation! ( 2 Corinthians 5:17 ). I experienced a “rebirth”!

Finisher

The Greek word that is translated finisher is teleiótés.  It is also translated as ‘completer’. So let’s lay aside any doubts as to whether Jesus will complete the work of salvation that He started in us. Like an artist working on a painting, Jesus will not rest until we have become His masterpiece!

In a recent blog post, I mentioned that salvation is based on the new covenant ( read Timeless Love). In ancient times, the parties to a covenant swore to defend the covenant with everything they had, including their lives, and it’s no different with our salvation. Jesus is the Captain of our salvation.  Captain is a military title – this fact should not be lost on us!  Our faith is often challenged by Satan, whose nature is to accuse. So much so, that he accuses believers day and night ( Rev 12:10 ).  He can use anyone to do this, even a fellow Christian. Just this morning I experienced this and it was very painful.  So as I write this, re-focusing on the truth that Jesus is my Advocate gives me great comfort (1 John 2:1). As my Advocate, He prays for me, (Hebrews 7:25) just like He prayed for Peter when Satan sought to destroy his faith ( Luke 22:31-32).

As the finisher of our faith, Jesus shields, or keeps us by His power, until the end of the age ( 1 Peter 1:5 ).  In the words of an old hymn that I heard my mother sing often, we “have a Saviour who is mighty to keep, mighty to keep, evermore.”

Prayer: Lord Jesus. Thank you for reminding me through this song, that You are the Author and Finisher of my faith. You are daily recreating and perfecting me, working on me with great care, as an artist working on His masterpiece. I rejoice in knowing that as I yield to You, not only will I fulfill Your plans for me, but, the seemingly impossible will happen –  I will become more and more like You.
