Treasures in the Darkness: The Gift of God’s Peace

His peace also has the power to guard our hearts and minds. The Greek word translated ‘guard’ can be translated ‘garrison.’ God extends His peace to us, in order to provide effective protection for our hearts from worry, confusion, doubt, anxiety and fear.

This devotional is from the series “Treasures in the Darkness.”  It is inspired by the song “In Every Circumstance.”

Song: In Every Circumstance

I praise You Jehovah Jireh

My provider

I praise You Jehovah Shalom

You’re my Peace

I praise You Jehovah Nissi

You’re my Banner

I praise You Jehovah Jireh

I praise You Jehovah Shalom

I praise You Jehovah Nissi

My Everything

(You are my Peace

You are my Peace

In every circumstance You will always be My peace) X2

I praise You the God of Israel

You’re my Stronghold

I praise You the God of Jacob

You’re My Shield

I praise You the God of Jerusalem

You’re My Fortress

You will be exalted above the Heavens

You will be exalted above the nations

You will be exalted above all gods

You are God Most High

(You are my Strength

You are my Strength

In every circumstance You will always be my Strength)X2

Scripture Readings

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27, NIV)

“You will keep in perfect peace, all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you.” (Isaiah 26:3, NIV)

“Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which passes all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”(Philippians 4:6,7, NIV)

“May the God of all encouragement and hope fill you with joy and peace as You trust Him so that You may overflow with confident hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”(Romans 15:13, NIV).

Just a couple of days ago, it was as if I saw John 14:27 for the first time.  The fact that Jesus has given me the peace that He Himself enjoys seemed to come alive and become a treasure in the darkness – the uncertain circumstances I am facing.  “My peace I give to you.”

More often than not, we find ourselves in unexpected situations. Things take a while to improve, and we feel helpless, even trapped.  Yet we can draw strength from the fact that we have something that the world cannot give – a peace that does not depend on circumstances.

God is never worried by world events or any of the things His people do. He is eternal, and not subject to time. He knows the future.  Nothing catches Him by surprise. He is omnipotent, omniscient and all wise, and His purposes cannot be thwarted.  It’s therefore impossible for Him to be anything but calm. His is a calmness derived from the fact that He is fully in charge and situations are under His control. It is this calmness that He offers us as a gift.  When we experience this peace, it’s effect on us defies explanation.  We can experience it even when all hell is breaking loose around us. Literally. I have experienced it and I know it is true.

But there’s more. His peace also has the power to guard our hearts and minds. The Greek word translated ‘guard’ can be translated ‘garrison.’ God extends His peace to us, in order to provide effective protection for our hearts from worry, confusion, doubt, anxiety and fear.

Paul constantly faced great opposition and danger in the course of his ministry. Yet he was able to soldier on, and finish the task God had given Him.  He could confidently testify of a “God comfort of encouragement who can fill us with peace and joy as we trust Him” (Romans 15:13).  Think about that! In the midst of danger, you and I can be full of peace.

This is God’s gift to us. But to enjoy the gift, we have to reject worries and doubts as soon as they attack our minds.  Our minds cannot be filled with God’s peace and have room for worry.  We are the ones who choose which of the two it will be. God can keep us in perfect peace  – but only as we fix our minds on Him.  So let’s not allow ourselves to be troubled by failing to focus on the Lord.

I came to greatly value the importance of peace a few years ago, when, after a very stressful season, I suffered from panic attacks. They lasted about a week. I tried natural remedies, and, later on, medication, all to no end. It took prayer, memorizing Bible verses on God’s peace and declaring them out loud to find relief. I also had to rebuke the spirit of fear.  Days later, I was free – enjoying God’s peace again!

Father,  Thank you for the gift of your peace. How good and kind you are to us, that as we focus on you and trust you, we can “download” your peace and experience a supernatural calmness, protecting our hearts and minds from fear, worry, anxiety and doubt. This is part of the abundant life that you want us to enjoy. I am truly grateful.
